On this tour we will visit the Shrine of Fatima, the world’s largest center of veneration to the Virgin Mary, located in Cova da Iria, where, on May 13th, 1917, three shepherds, Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta, had the appearance of Our Lady, brighter than the sun, on the top of an oak tree. About 5 million pilgrims and tourists from around the world flock each year to the Shrine of Fatima, which was visited by Pope John Paul II in the years 1982, 1991 and 2000 and more recently, in 2010, by Pope Benedict XVI.
Besides the Chapel of Apparitions, in the huge square where the pilgrims join, we can visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Fatima and the new Church of the Holy Trinity, the fourth largest Christian church in the world, with capacity for 8,500 people, where you can attend mass. Near Cova da Iria you may also visit other places of pilgrimage related to the apparitions, like the shepherd’s houses and Arneiro´well in Aljustrel, and Loca do Anjo, the Via Crucis, and Hungarian Calvary in Valinhos.
